First, is it the headlight or the bulb?

On a halogen or HID headlight, a burnt bulb, a blown fuse or a melted connector is the usual reason one side goes dark. Those are quick fixes at a local shop, not a reason to buy a whole new headlight.

Sealed LED headlights have no bulb to change. When an LED section, the DRL strip or a halo goes dark, the fault is usually inside the unit.

The checks, step by step: Headlight Not Working? Bulb, Wiring or the Headlight Itself.

Is it worth repairing a headlight?

When one part failed inside a factory headlight, fixing that part keeps everything else you already own:

  • You keep the original factory headlight, built for your vehicle.
  • It goes back into the same mounts, so the fit against the grille and fender stays as it was.
  • Left and right stay a matched pair.
  • Only the failed part gets replaced: LED board, DRL strip, seal, lens or a broken tab.

Do I need a new headlight? When replacing makes more sense

Repair is not always the answer. A new headlight, or another fix, makes more sense when:

  • The housing is shattered or missing pieces after a crash.
  • It is an aftermarket headlight. We only work on factory headlights.
  • The problem is the bulb, a fuse or the wiring, which a local shop fixes.

If your model year has an open recall or an extended warranty from the manufacturer, check with your dealer first.

Faults that are usually repaired, not replaced

These failures often send people shopping for a new headlight while the rest of the unit is fine:

  • An LED section, driver or DRL strip that flickers or stays dark. Tell us the symptom and we'll confirm whether the LED or DRL module can be repaired. See LED Headlight Repair.
  • Water or fog inside the lens. We open, dry and reseal the headlight; the quote confirms whether anything inside was damaged. See Headlight Condensation Repair & Resealing.
  • A cracked or chipped outer lens. Tell us what happened to the lens and we will confirm whether the outer lens can be replaced on your headlight. See Headlight Lens Replacement Service.
  • A burnt or peeling reflector. Tell us about the damage and we'll confirm whether it can be repaired.

All of them: Headlight Repair Services.

If one DRL strip is out on an Atlas, see Volkswagen Atlas Headlight Repair. If a Palisade headlight flickers, dims or goes out, see Hyundai Palisade Headlight Repair. If the DRL is out on a Durango, see Dodge Durango Headlight Repair.

A cloudy lens is a different question

A yellow or hazy lens does not mean a new headlight either: the outer lens can be replaced with a new one, and we do not polish it.

Polishing strips the lens's factory protective coating, leaves it weaker, and the haze tends to come back. More in Headlight Repair vs. Headlight Restoration: What Is the Difference.

Questions before you buy a new headlight

Should I replace or repair my headlight if only one side is out?

Check the bulb and the fuse on that side first. If it is a sealed LED unit, or a new bulb does not help, send photos: repairing the failed part keeps the pair matched.

Will a repaired headlight match the other side?

It is the same headlight that came off your vehicle, with its own housing and mounts, so it still sits like the other side.
