How to Fix a Cracked Headlight Lens

How to fix a cracked headlight lens depends on what you need: a patch to get you home, or a fix that keeps the water out. Tape, glue and crack film can buy you a few days. A new outer lens sealed on your original headlight is the repair that lasts, and we do it by mail anywhere in the U.S., with a free quote first.

From $400 per headlight — final price in your free quote. Packing and shipping instructions come with your quote.

Why a cracked headlight lens lets water in

Your headlight is a sealed unit. The outer lens, or cover, is bonded to the housing all the way around, and that seal keeps rain and road spray away from the bulbs, LEDs and reflectors inside.

A crack breaks the seal. A rock hit on the highway or a parking bump can start it, and heat can spread it into spider cracks.

Signs the crack is already letting water in:

  • Fog or droplets on the inside of the lens after rain or a car wash
  • A beam that looks scattered or dimmer than the other side
  • A flicker or a dark section on an LED headlight

Once moisture is inside, the headlight has to be dried and resealed too, as in Headlight Condensation Repair & Resealing.

Tape, super glue and crack film: what they can and can't do

Most answers to how to fix a cracked headlight cover fall into three groups:

  • Clear repair tape over the crack keeps rain off the surface for a while, but heat and car washes lift its edges.
  • Super glue or clear epoxy in the crack can slow a small crack down, but it rarely fills the gap all the way through.
  • Crack film or a lens kit covers the outside of the lens, not the opening underneath.

None of them seals the headlight again. Water that already got in stays in, and a patched cover still looks damaged from another car.

A patch gets you home. It is not the repair.

Can you drive with a broken headlight cover?

It depends on your state and on what an officer sees. A cracked or broken cover is easy to spot from another car, and a damaged headlight can lead to a traffic stop or a fix-it ticket.

A fix-it ticket usually asks you to repair the headlight and show proof. How that tends to work is in Driving With a Broken Headlight: Tickets and Fix-It Tickets.

For state rules, see Fix-It Ticket in California for a Broken Headlight and Broken Headlight Ticket in Texas: What the Law Says.

This guide is general information, not legal advice.

When the crack is in the housing, not the lens

Look behind the lens. If the crack runs into the plastic body of the headlight, or a mounting tab has snapped, a new lens alone will not fix it.

Housing cracks and broken tabs are covered in Headlight Mounting Tab & Housing Repair. Heavier impact damage is in Broken Headlight Repair.

A lens that is only yellow, hazy or peeling, with no crack, can get a new outer lens too. We do not polish it: polishing strips the factory coating, leaves the lens weaker and the haze returns. The difference is explained in Headlight Repair vs. Headlight Restoration: What Is the Difference.

The fix that lasts: a new outer lens

If you want to know how to repair a cracked headlight lens for good, the answer is to replace the lens and seal the headlight again. The old lens comes off the housing, the sealant channel is cleaned, and a new lens goes on with fresh sealant.

You keep your original headlight, with its factory fit, its beam pattern and a pair that still matches at night. Tell us what happened to the lens and we will confirm whether the outer lens can be replaced on your headlight.

The full service is in Headlight Lens Replacement Service.

Cracked lens questions

Is it legal to drive with a broken headlight cover?

Rules differ by state, and a cracked cover that still lights can still draw attention at a stop. Check the state guides above, and repair the lens before water gets in.

My lens has a melted spot. Is that the same repair?

It can be. A melted spot is damage to the lens itself, so send a photo and your quote confirms whether a new lens can go on your headlight.
