Steady or flashing: what the warning means
The Adaptive Front-lighting System turns the low beams as you steer and keeps their aim level.
A steady light usually means the AFS OFF button was pressed. A flashing light means the system detected a fault and shut down, so the beams stop following the road.
What to check before you remove the headlight
- Press the AFS OFF button once. If the light goes out and stays out, nothing failed.
- Check the lighting fuses and the battery. Low voltage can set lighting faults.
- Look at the height sensor on the suspension. Its link often bends after a lift, a tow or suspension work.
- Have the codes read with a scan tool that covers lighting. They show which side and which part.
If the codes point to the sensor or the car's wiring, a local mechanic is the right call. If they point to one headlight, that is what we repair.
When the fault is inside the headlight
- Corroded pins and connections inside the housing: cleaned or repaired.
- Electronics inside the unit that no longer respond: tested and repaired.
- Swivel and leveling motors: Tell us about the issue and we'll confirm whether it can be repaired.
- Water that got in and caused the fault: dried and resealed.

Toyota AFS OFF and other models with the same system
Some Toyota models share the design, so a Toyota AFS OFF light gets the same checks and repair. Lexus owners report it on the IS, ES, GS, RX and SC.
Why repair the original? A replacement must be the exact AFS version, or it can set the light itself. The repaired unit keeps parts the car recognizes and a beam that matches the other side.

AFS warning questions
Can I keep driving with the light flashing?
The headlights still work, but they no longer turn or level, so the beam may sit too low or too high. Have it checked soon.
My Lexus says “Check headlight system.” Is that the same fault?
